Qilin Candles offers a wide variety of fragrances that are unique, appealing, safe to use and cost effective. To achieve this, Qilin Candles use only Fragrance Oils for all our candles and diffusers.

However when making candles, there are two main options: Fragrance Oils and Essential Oils.

Here’s a breakdown of each:

Fragrance Oils

  • Synthetic: Fragrance oils are typically synthetic, which allows for a wide range of complex and unique scents, including those that cannot be derived from natural sources (e.g., “Amalfi Coast” or “Egyptian Musk”).
  • Long-lasting: They tend to have a stronger,longer-lasting scent and a better throw (how well the scent spreads when the candle is burning).
  • Heat-resistance: Specifically formulated to withstand the high heat of candle-making, meaning the scent is less likely to degrade when exposed to flame.
  • Cost-effective: Generally cheaper than essential oils, making them more affordable for large batches.
  • Customizable: Available in thousands of different scents and can be blended to create unique fragrances.

Essential Oils

  • Natural: Essential oils are derived from plants, making them a more natural and holistic option.
  • Heat-sensitive: They are more prone to breaking down when exposed to the heat of a candle flame, which can reduce their potency over time.
  • Subtle Scent: The scent throw tends to be more subtle, and you may need to use more oil to get a noticeable fragrance.
  • Expensive: Typically more expensive than fragrance oils due to their natural origin and extraction process.

Tips for Using Oils in Candle Making

  • Use Candle-Safe Oils: Ensure that the fragrance or essential oils you’re using are suitable for candle making, as not all oils are.
  • Flashpoint: Be aware of the oil’s flashpoint, which is the temperature at which it can ignite. Make sure the oil you choose has a high enough flashpoint to be safe for use in candles.
  • Fragrance Load: For both types of oils, the fragrance load (the percentage of oil used in a candle) is usually around 6-10% of the total weight of the wax.

We hope this helps you understand the Qilin Candle you are using and enables you to make an informed choice when selecting your candle and also, appreciate the science behind the production of our candles that offer a cost effective, long-lasting fragrant candle.
